On the Cape

Right up on the ridge between Begtrup Vig and Ebeltoft Vig, the westerly wind whips across a small collection of holiday homes from the 70s. An extension here has to take into account both the magnificent view of the landscape and the cove, and at the same time add plenty of common space to the old cottage, for living room, fireplace and kitchen.

The result was an extension the same size as the original holiday home, but now at a 90 degree angle on the view. This more than doubled the panoramic window, and in the transition from one floor surface to another, exciting things could happen, such as the placement of a fireplace, on a couple of wide steps where you can sit on a sheepskin in the winter and snuggle up with a cup of tea and a great view. I put the kitchen down in the end, at the gable, and designed a niche for it so it got its own space. The windows in the kitchen are low, so when you sit at the dining table, the look over the cove reveals itself. A little hidden experience…

By angling the extension, there is access to a nice sunny corner at the back, away from the eternal westerly wind.
